The Daunting Task of Choosing a Infant Car Seat

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Choosing an infant car seat is a daunting task for conscientious parents or parents-to-be. First, one must decide, what the best car seats on the market are, and you must decide whether to purchase a carrier (infant) type car seat, or convertible car seat. How big is your child? If you are talking about an infant that is to be brought home from the hospital, you likely will be purchasing an infant type car seat. These car seats typically are used for the first 6 months to a year of your baby’s life. They are cumbersome in some respects, but when you have an infant that cannot sit up, they are a life saver when you need to run errands and attend events. If your baby is ready to transition out of an infant seat into a convertible seat, you again are plagued with the question, what is the best seat for my child? Truthfully, that choice isn’t as clear as one would hope. There are hundreds of car seats on the market, and some are relatively cheap, and some are extremely expensive. I have always gone to Consumer Reports to see what their reviews show. Then, I measured the seat base to make certain it would fit in my vehicle. Finally, many car seats say they will hold up to a 100lbs child or some other number, but the truth is, you will likely transition your child to a booster seat by age 4, so that upper weight limit need not be that high. Whatever you decide, make certain that you do not buy your car seat second hand unless you personally know who you are getting the seat from, and also check for the expiration date (yes, car seats do have these). Never use infant car seats that have been in a car crash of any sort, as it could weaken the plastics in it.
